Since discovering chips and having three children, I have let’s say put on a bit of weight! Well potentially a fair amount, I have been progressively eating exactly what I like and when I like it! Now I am not lucky enough to be the type of person who doesn’t put weight on so here I am in January, feeling bloating and sluggish. Deciding that when I go back to work after the Christmas break I am Cycling! 😂😩🚴♀️
I am borrowing my mums bike, as I quite frankly don’t own one! 😫She brings it to my house the night before and I am kind of all set! Well mentally I am, but physically I’m not! I have an idea of what to wear and the route I will take but generally I just wing things, so this is what I am going to do!🙈
(Writing this about ‘winging’ things I am remembering the first time that I ever went skiing! I can’t remember my age, maybe 19 ish. On the first morning, in a borrowed all in one, and funky hat, I put my skis on and can’t even walk in them, somehow I do, and navigate the ski lift! My lesson isn’t until the afternoon so my friend – who can already ski, and myself get to the top of the nursery slope where she is going to teach me! I didn’t even fall off the lift! 😂👍 So she is telling me what I need to do, the snow plow etc, and I say to her “Kirin! I am just going to go for it!” She is absolutely laughing her head off! And asking me if I am serious? I nod and just go for it down the slope! 😂😂😂⛷ At this point I had no idea of taking it slow, turning, gliding across each side of the slope! I had never skied in my life! At first it was exhilarating, the speed, the wind, the freedom!
So here I am gathering speed down the slope and the hotels are getting closer, people are moving out of the way and it suddenly dawns on me that I don’t know how to stop! I can’t remember if I was screaming! 😂🙄🙈 I think to myself that I need to stop, so near to the bottom I just threw myself onto the floor! 😂😂😂😂 I remember rolling and my skis coming off! Next thing my friend comes skiing down laughing her head off! Telling me she can’t believe I did it! 😂😂😂😂 No injuries! I hop back up! 😍🙈
From that moment on! I LOVED skiing! ⛷😍😂)
Anyway……. back to the bike! (Leaping lizards- where you go off on a tangent!)
I have no idea of timings, fitness levels or anything! But I am going for it!
Now the morning arrives and it’s raining! Not one to back out I find my sweat suit! (Its plastic so should do the trick!) I don’t actually own any waterproofs! (Still don’t! 😫It’s on my decathlon list!)
I have a helmet, gloves, a lock, lights and a waterproof, reflective coat!
Off I go………..
I am literally 10 metres down the road and I want to stop! 😫 I need to turn back, seriously this is horrendous! Well I keep on going and am thrilled that I make the 1st hill without stopping! How on earth did I not realise that the majority of roads are 1) Steep! 2) Have hills on them! And, 3) Are god damn difficult to navigate on a bike! I stopped and walked about 3 times as I just couldn’t handle the pace! Needless to say I got to work late! And soaking wet! Gutted, no spare clothes no nothing! Fortunately by mid morning I was pretty dry and felt actually amazing for doing a bit of exercise!
Going home was way quicker, and by around day 3 I found a short cut and wasn’t stopping! 👊💪
Now I had to change my route as I needed to drop off the children first, and then ride my bike, so I started to cut through the local park and had 3 hills to navigate! As it was January the weather was shocking, and on my last day that week the wind was sooooooo bad! It was like I was riding an exercise bike! I was literally going nowhere fast! I thought that I was going to fall to the side at any point! The wind was so strong! 💨🌪
Decision is made! The bike is going away until better weather surfaces!
One thing about riding the bike is that I could feel my bottom, it felt amazing and like it was being worked which is a bonus! But the downside is saddle sore, oh my gosh, underneath and between my legs was sore! So sore, as soon as I hopped back on the bike I was like woah, this hurts!
Fast forward to Easter and the bank holiday weekend! I’m starting biking again! It is now 4 weeks later and I can honestly say that it is hard! 😫 I managed to ride there none stop in the 1st week of which I am immensely proud! 💪 but every morning I am knackered! I am so tired, I am sure that it is getting harder! I honestly thought that I would feel good by now but I don’t! I still get over took on a number of occasions by the super fit on their bikes striding past! How is it that they look like they are gently peddling gracefully by, but going about 15mph! There’s me peddling like crazy and going nowhere fast! Looking like an absolute lunatic! 😫😭 I just don’t get it! 🙄
I have worked out the gears and my tires are pumped up! (The 1st day was so hard and I realised that my tires were virtually flat!😫FFS)
I LOVE cycling home as it’s virtually all down hill! There is one part that you can gather some speed! It’s amazing! 👍😝 My wheels are going that fast that I can not pedal until I slow down a bit! Plus there is a hill after that so I’m virtually up it! 😂👍😍😝
I cannot wait until the day that I enjoy cycling to work! I really can’t! I am getting better everyday and beating my personal best but I must be totally unfit as my body hurts! My legs hurt and I can constantly feel the burn when I am cycling! They are hurting more now than they ever have and I can feel the aches even when I am running up or down stairs!
I talk using headphones to a dear friend who is stuck at home due to an operation every morning and she spurs me on to carry on and not stop! I do get a few funny looks off people who think that I am talking to myself, but it’s good to catch up and have that support!
I was riding the other day and chatting to a friend, I had a cup of tea in my work mug (travel cup!) that my mum had made me! And as I was riding through the local park I was one handed, sipping on a cup of tea whilst talking to another friend! 😂Crazy!
I have started to change my diet and eat before and after cycling! Things like a banana and that. It can only help! When I get home from work and the kids are in bed I am totally knackered! Exhausted to the point that I want to sleep where I am and not move! I thought exercise was supposed to give you more energy? Maybe because I’m a fat ass who is totally unfit and closer to 40 than 30!! Who knows? I have had a week off the bike and I must say that I have had way more energy, so with that in mind I have started to take a magnesium supplement, containing vitamin B6. I will keep you posted on this!
But I will keep plodding on, (cycling on!) until the summer, and I will report back on my findings! As long as my fitness levels are growing and my heart is healthy, then I am happy, and this is worth it!
One thing for sure is that I feel great to be part of the ‘people who cycle category’ and I do feel amazing after I have cycled! I feel happier, and as if I’m walking taller! So all in all it’s good!
All in all most drivers are great and do give me enough room but I have had a near miss on my way home once, where a sporty Mazda came too close to me and had to brake quickly! It was so close to me and virtually on top of me, so I moved onto the pavement after that as it shook me up slightly! 😫😂👊
Another time a car went past me also on my way home and the passengers were shouting something and taking photos or recording me! I haven’t a clue to be honest if they knew me or were having a joke! Who knows? I might find a video of myself on Facebook! Looking puzzled! 😂😂😫👊
I have started to cycle with the children too! Normally we would just put the kids bikes in the car, and drive somewhere for them to cycle, but now I have my own bike, and a seat on the back for my youngest and we are all enjoying cycling together, which is brilliant! 🚴♀️👍
Like I said, I have had a week off so far this week from cycling, to rest, and plus it has been raining! I have had way more energy though at night, which is interesting! I must say though, I haven’t missed the traffic in the mornings! I totally forgot about how busy the M56 is during the afternoon. And I have missed cycling this week to be fair! Next week I will be back on it! Let’s see if I feel the burn! 😫🙈😝🚴♀️
So this is where I am up to! I will keep you all updated on my progress and achievement! I hope that I continue to cycle and continue to ride as a family! 😍💪🚴♀️ I feel like an elite being a part of a the invisible group of people who commute to work by bycicle! And another bonus is the saving on petrol too! 😍👍
